Blog Journal 4

Twitter is an awesome social media resource. In this course it has taught me that there are a lot more professionals using twitter than I originally anticipated. For example I have followed and retweeted several accounts and tweets, respectively, from professional sources including Eduporium and Politics K-12. These accounts are beneficial because they offer ways to enhance a classroom and make your students more informed. In the future I can reference accounts like these to make my classroom a fun environment with students who want to learn.
The digital divide is the difference between those who have access to the computer or internet and those who don't have access. The digital divide affects students' success because those who don't have access to a computer or the internet are at an obvious disadvantage compared to those who have access. This is because those who have access can use the internet to find help with their homework or to turn in assignments online, whereas the students who don't have access are left to fend for themselves with assignments they may have trouble with. Some causes of the digital divide include the socioeconomic gap between students and their families and the location of the school/neighborhood in which the students attends/live in. The lower the socioeconomic class the student is in, then the less likely they are to have a computer or access to the internet. Likewise if the student lives in a rural neighborhood then they might be too far away from a library to access the internet there and still too poor to afford their own computer at home. This might affect the way I teach in that I won't assign things that have to be turned in online and I will be more available to the students who don't have internet access so I can help them with an assignment they may be struggling with.
Student software or academic software are ways to integrate technology and more specifically the internet into teaching. I expect to use educational games the most in my classroom because it will be a fun way for the students to learn and it will allow them to blow off some steam with an entertaining activity while still learning. I won't use the special needs software as much because I don't plan on teaching kids with special needs who will need assistance with hearing and reading.  I will be using this software when I begin teaching a gifted 4th grade class, more specifically a math and science oriented class.
