Resource Critique Activity

I'm aspiring to teach in the fourth grade one day, so I checked out the Florida Department of Education standards for fourth grade. The standard that stuck out to me was about interpreting information that is given orally, visually, or quantitatively. From there I chose a lesson plan resource from the CPALMS website called "Dance by the Light of the Moon". This lesson is intended to teach students about the phases of the moon by having them analyze charts and other information in order to schedule a Halloween party. The objective is to try and schedule a date in October where at least half the moon is out (for optimal lighting).
The resource is fantastic because it is very lengthy and detailed and it is something that kids don't typically learn about in the classroom. This resource would be useful on a day where there are several kids missing from a class or if I ever found myself ahead of the curriculum guide. I like that the resource has plenty of questions for the students to answer before and after they do the activity and that it provides me with the answers to most of these questions. The questions asked at the end of the activity include when the full moon would be and what the temperature would be like on the half moon and other different scenarios so that the Halloween party would land on different dates, which is something I appreciate because it gets the kids to think more critically and it just makes the whole lesson plan better. The resource also supplies me with fake letters that I can provide to the students to make the situation seem more realistic so that they'll actually enjoy this activity.
Something I would add to the lesson plan would be a fun video displaying the phases of the moon or an animation of a group of people dancing under the moonlight at the Halloween party.

  1. This lesson plan seems super creative and a fun way to teach a lesson on phases of the moon by adding a holiday that kids enjoy. I liked your idea of adding a video which can make the lesson more technology based.

  3. I also agree with the standard of learning orally, visually, or quantitatively. I think this lesson seems very interesting. I think with the questions that would be asked and the assignments the students would have to complete would make it very easy for them to answer questions and engage in the assignment.
